During a long interview with MARCA, Toni Nadal revealed some secrets behind Rafael Nadal‘s famous mental strength. Toni revealed: “I had him train for years in poor playing conditions and with very damaged balls. Sometimes I would tell Rafael Nadal that we would train for an hour or so, but in the end I would extend the duration of the session indefinitely.
I have always been obsessed with preparing him to face difficulties. He had to learn to manage the bad moments and it was necessary to forge his character.” After having stopped following Rafa around the world, Toni has dedicated himself to the growth of several young talents.
He explained: “You have to have goals in life, otherwise you lose hope and everything becomes boring. We live in an age in which we are no longer taught to hold out and resist in the face of adversity. There are many guys who play very well when things go their way, but who don’t know how to deal with complicated moments.”
Rafael Nadal’s 2021
2021 was certainly not a year that Rafael Nadal will gladly remember in the future. The former world number 1 was severely limited by physical problems, which prevented him from reaching top form throughout the season.
Despite having posted two trophies on his beloved clay court (Barcelona and Rome), the Spanish champion has never given the feeling of being 100%. It is no coincidence that Rafa failed to win his 14th title at Roland Garros, where he surrendered to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.
The year of the 20-time Grand Slam champion basically ended there. The pain in his foot forced him to miss Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics, with the hope of returning to competition on American hard courts in the summer. The 35-year-old from Manacor took part in the Washington tournament for the first time in his career, but he had to bow to Lloyd Harris after risking a lot against Jack Sock on his debut. A few days later, the Iberian announced his decision to close his 2021 early.
