Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has revealed that Lewis Hamilton’s car will be fitted with their “spicy engine”, which was used at the Brazilian Grand Prix, next time out in Saudi Arabia.

Hamilton made it back-to-back victories by winning the inaugural Qatar GP on Sunday, dominating the weekend despite using the power unit that was raced in Turkey, the USA and Mexico.

The seven-time World Champion took pole position by more than half a second over title rival Max Verstappen and led every lap on his way to victory at the Losail International Circuit.

Wolff expects Mercedes to be competitive at the next event in Saudi Arabia.

“Saudi should be a good track for us, but we know this year, when you think it’s a good one, it can turn the other way around,” Wolff told Sky Sports.

“There’s a long straight. We’ll get our spicy engine out for Saudi Arabia that we didn’t use here [in Qatar], and hopefully Valtteri [Bottas] is right up there [too] – we need him.

“But in any case, if everybody finishes the race, it’s going to go down to Abu Dhabi.”
Wolff enjoying every minute of the run-in

Hamilton cut Verstappen’s lead in the Drivers’ Championship to eight points with his win in Qatar, although Mercedes only have a five-point advantage over Red Bull in the Constructors’ standings.

Wolff added that he’s enjoying the intensity of the title fight and believes Mercedes have to be on “maximum attack” in Saudi Arabia.

“I really enjoy the ride because it’s good fun when it’s so tough,” said Wolff. “This is exactly why we’re in the sport and I enjoy every minute.

“I think we’ve got to push maximum attack. We have to catch up, make some points up and this is just what we’re going to do.”
