Similar to Roger Federer, who is known for being almost omnipresent at the ATP tournament taking place since 1970 in Basel, which is also the Swiss master’s hometown, Emma Raducanu, the fresh US Open champion, found a similar place in Cluj-Napoca, the Romanian city where the Transylvania Open is played.
Raducanu feels at home in Romania, the original country of his father, and her on-court performance during her first two matches at the Cluj-Napoca tournament resembles her flawless US Open form. Besides this, Emma managed to win the hearts of Romanians all across the country with her decision to speak in Romanian during one of her post-match interviews.
“Everyone adopted Emma, because she conquered everyone with that speech in Romanian. Some people thought that Emma does not speak Romanian at all, here she speaks very well, with the necessary accent,” said Patrick Ciorcila, the Transylvania Open’s Tournament Director.
Furthermore, the TD shared Raducanu’s wish to come back at every future edition of the Transylvania Open, even though the current 2021 is still unfolding. “I talked to her and her father, they are very attached to Romania, they really wanted to come here, and they feel very good.
Emma Răducanu said that she will come to every edition that we will organize in the future,” said TD Patrick Ciorcila.
Raducanu is set to play against Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals of the Transylvania Open.
Roger Federer and his love for Basel
The player with the most Basel titles is no one other than former ball kid Roger Federer. “I loved being a ball boy here. I was able to see the best players in the world firsthand and see how they would prepare, how they would sweat, how they dealt with the pressure.
They’re good moments for me,” Federer told Tennis TV in a past interview. Between 2006 and 2019, the 20-time Grand Slam champion competed in 13 Basel tournament editions, winning 10 titles out of the 13 played finals, topping with a 61-3 won-lost matches record.
As one of the many honors presented by the Swiss town to Roger Federer, the city officials recently announced their newest tram called Federer Express.
Cluj-Napoca is not the hometown of Emma Raducanu as Basel is for Federer, but it’s still a city with many tennis fans located in the natal country of Raducanu’s father, which already made the British US Open champion find a new home.
