Medvedev dreams of becoming a No. 1 player but admits Djokovic deserves the position at the moment.

Russian tennis star Daniil Medvedev has been dreaming about becoming world No. 1 for 20 years but he admits that Novak Djokovic deserves to be the highest-ranked player in the world at the moment. Medvedev, who achieved a career-high ranking of No.2 in the world this past March, is inching closer toward overtaking Djokovic at the spot on the ATP rankings list. Djokovic currently has 11,633 points, while Medvedev has collected 10,575 points.

Djokovic made it all the way at the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon but failed to win the US Open after losing in straight sets to Medvedev in the final at Flushing Meadows.

“Since I was six, I have dreamed of becoming world number one, but Djokovic deserves to be, he is the real number one this season. He won three Grand Slam titles. It’s reality. This is one of my goals. I just need to win a hell of a lot of Grand Slam matches and tournaments,” Medvedev said, per We Love Tennis.

just playing the biggest tournaments, or the ones that will get me back into shape so I’m really happy that I managed to get 50 [wins]. It means that I managed to get 50 [wins]. It means that I was doing pretty good in a lot of them,” Medvedev said. “Filip is a really tough opponent.

He’s always playing top tennis, very tough matches, especially that second set. [There were a] lot of ups and downs, but I think a great level from both of us. Really happy that in the tie-break I managed to [gain] the edge on my side”. Medvedev fill be fighting against former world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov for a place in the Indian Wells quarterfinal.
